My Journey Toward Becoming a Work at Home Mom {Part 3}: Making a Plan & Sticking to It

I’m back! It’s been weeks {ok, a month and a half – yikes!} since I’ve posted to the blog. This is in part due to the craziness of the holidays and in part due to some things I’ve been working on behind the scenes.

Good news is that I think I finally have my butt in gear {ha!} and will be posting regularly once again!

As far as the “behind the scenes” work I’ve been doing, I’ve been busy training and making plans for my at-home business. I’ve touched on this dream in two other blog posts in my “Journey Toward Becoming a Work at Home Mom” series {see part 1 and part 2}. In the past few weeks this dream has only become stronger.

At the same time, to be honest, I’ve been fighting some issues with ambition. {Winter does that to me… ahh, the joy of cabin fever and winter blues.} However, I have a new fire within me to fight through these challenges and make this thing happen.

It Begins with a Plan

I know that there are many moms out there who also want to work from home, but if you’re like me, you’ve wondered how you’d do it.

I’ve found two ways that others are earning a good income while working a flexible schedule at home. If others can do it, why can’t I? And why can’t you too?!

If you’ve been wondering how you can work from home, maybe one or both of these options will work for you too!

Here are the two ways I plan to earn an income at home:

1. Freelance Writing & Blogging

Kate likes to write. Writing is fun. Watch Kate write!

Ok, being silly here. In all seriousness, I really do love to write. I’ve been able to tap into this passion throughout my marketing career and have written for a wide range of industries. From chocolate shops to fitness centers and everything in between, I love getting to know a business on an intimate level and helping them better communicate to their target market.

You can do this too!

Have you thought about becoming a freelance writer too? If so, here are a few of my favorite resources:

  • Leave Work Behind is a great source of information and inspiration. It documents one freelance writer’s journey from a full-time corporate job to a part-time work-at-home job. Even if you don’t think you have what it takes to be a freelance writer, check this site out!
  • There are a number of places to find work online. A few that I like include: ProBlogger, BloggingPro, and Freelance Writing Gigs. I’ve heard that, surprisingly, you can also find legitimate work on Craigslist and Twitter (search for freelance writer job, etc.).
  • While there are a number of jobs and resources online for writers, don’t forget your local resources! I will soon be joining a BNI networking group and will be focusing my efforts on finding work “in my backyard.”

2. Health & Wellness Business

I have joined a group of health- and earth-conscious ladies called Project Dream! Each of us have our own Shaklee businesses. Shaklee is a 50+ year old company that offers safe, natural cleaning, beauty, supplements, and weight loss products.

Who is using Shaklee? Oh, you know, just every astronaut in NASA missions since 1993, the White House, and Oprah {Shaklee was included in her Favorite Things show}. No biggie. Ha!

I happened upon Shaklee when I was on a hunt to find chemical-free cleaning products, which is a necessity now that I have a one-year old who does things like lick the floor {ha!}. While researching the in’s and out’s of Shaklee, I also learned that Skaklee provides a business opportunity.

I loved the idea of standing behind a company that I really believed in.

Without a shadow of a doubt, I know that I joined the best Shaklee team – Project Dream! I’m so excited to be a part of it. There is nothing better than a group of women supporting each other and each other’s dreams – big and small.

{That’s me, second from the left. We took this pic at our Regional Conference in Chicago last fall. It was a blast!}

I really feel this group of women were an answer to my prayers. The training and support they offer is helping me become a better mom and wife, live a healthier life, and better understand business in general, which really benefits both of my businesses!

I’m especially excited about this venture because it allows me to be in business for myself but not by myself!

You can do this too!

The really fun part about this one is that if any of this sounds exciting to you too, you can join me! Project Dream is the fastest growing team in Shaklee – it’s never to late to join.

Now to DO the Plan

I thrive on planning, writing lists, and organizing my thoughts and ideas. Sometimes, however, I spend more time planning than actually doing! Have you ever struggled with that? So now that I have a plan, I need to DO the plan.

There will always be books to read and other resources to help a business grow, but if you’re not doing REAL work in between all of this planning and learning, you’ll get nowhere.

So there you have it. My plan to reach my dream! I’ll continue to share my up’s and down’s on this journey toward becoming a work at home mom.

Can you do me a favor, and cheer me on? Likewise, if you share the same dream, I want to know so that I can cheer you on too! We can do this, right!?
