My Favorite Protein Smoothie Recipes & Tips

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Up until last year I ignored this advice and skipped breakfast altogether. I would maybe have a mid-morning snack, but would often not eat until lunch.

Say what?? I look back at this now that wonder how I ever made it all those hours without fueling my body.

Now I eat a protein smoothie every morning. I love how they taste, how easy they are to prepare, and {most importantly} how I feel throughout the day.

The Best Protein Smoothie Recipes

While you can simply mix protein powder with a liquid and go, I prefer to take this opportunity to incorporate additional flavors and nutrients. I always use water or almond milk, but you can use whatever liquid you prefer – milk, soy milk, etc.

Here are my favorite protein smoothie recipes:

Two scoops chocolate protein powder, 1 tsp peanut butter, 1 cup of almond milk, and 1/2 of a banana

Protein Smoothie Tips

Here are my top tips to making delicious, nutritious smoothies:

  • Make your smoothies with a blender {Vitamix, Magic Bullet, etc.} for the smoothest results. When smoothies are stirred by hand, sometimes not all of the powder will dissolve. When making a smoothie on the go, consider a shaker or a battery-operated mixer.
  • Put the liquid and other ingredients in the blender before the protein powder otherwise the powder can sometimes get stuck in the blade.
  • Add bananas to your smoothies for an extra creamy texture. While I like bananas, I don’t love them. However, I do love them in smoothies! Even if bananas aren’t your fav, give ’em a try! {Frozen bananas are even better!}
  • My blender doesn’t always pulverize ice and so I will often simply add ice to the glass rather than blend it in. Personally, I prefer my smoothies to be really cold – and that’s why I love blending in frozen bananas!
  • When in doubt, choose vanilla protein powder. It’s the most versatile flavor.
  • My #1 tip: Choose a good quality protein powder. Not all protein powders are created equal.

My Protein Powder of Choice

I choose Shaklee 180 Energizing Smoothee mix because:

  • It has leucine in it which protects your muscles and metabolism so that you will lose fat instead of muscles.
  • It is one of the very few non-GMO soy proteins on the market.
  • There are no artificial flavors, sugars, dyes, etc. in it.
  • It has more protein, zinc, B vitamins, and selenium and fewer calories than most powders on the market.
  • It keeps me feeling satisfied for 4+ hours.
  • I LOVE the taste {and I certainly can’t say that about all of the powders I’ve tried}.

If you haven’t tried protein smoothies before, I hope I’ve inspired you to do so! While I eat them for breakfast everyday, they also make a great lunch, dinner, or snack!
